Haiti

Though only an hour’s flight from Miami and mainland America, Haiti remains the least-developed country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. Chronic instability, dictatorships and natural disasters in recent decades have left Haiti as the poorest nation in the Americas. The 12th of January 2010 at 16:53, an earthquake hit Haiti, and was reported to have left up to 316,000 people dead and 1.6 million homeless. Voodoo is important to Haitian culture. Part paganism, part Catholicism, it’s a disconcerting mix of rage and ecstasy.
